About this directory
Almost every "best web hosting" list you will find is an affiliate page. The commission on a hosting signup is commonly £50 to £150, which is why the same handful of providers top every table regardless of whether they are any good.
This directory carries no affiliate links and no sponsored placements. Outbound links are plain nofollow links. Nobody pays to be listed, ranked or removed.
How the rating works
The score out of five is editorial, weighted roughly as:
- Infrastructure and performance (30%) — storage type, web server stack, PHP versions, caching, network, and whether there is a UK or nearby data centre.
- Pricing honesty (25%) — how far the renewal price diverges from the advertised one, whether backups and SSL are bundled or upsold, and whether monthly billing exists.
- Support (20%) — hours, channels, and whether the people answering understand the platform.
- Control and exit (15%) — full backups, database access, SSH, and whether you can leave with your site intact.
- Ethics and sustainability (10%) — ownership, renewable energy, and treatment of customers at cancellation.
A provider is not penalised for being expensive if the price buys something. It is penalised for a £2.99 headline that becomes £14.99 in month thirteen.
What "UK hosting" means here
The Based in column is where the company is headquartered. The UK data centre column in the comparison table is the one that affects your site's speed and your data residency position — several non-UK companies (Namecheap, Hostinger, SiteGround, DigitalOcean, OVHcloud, Nexcess) will serve your site from London or Nottingham if you select that region at signup.
Accuracy and corrections
Hosting prices and features change constantly. Everything here was last reviewed on 5 September 2026, and figures are indicative rather than quotations. Always confirm on the provider's own site before purchasing — particularly the renewal price, the backup retention period and the resource limits.
If a listing is wrong or out of date, corrections are welcome and will be made without argument.
Technical notes
The site is plain PHP with a flat-file dataset — no database, no framework, no tracking scripts, no cookies. It is, deliberately, the sort of site that would run happily on the cheapest plan of any provider listed on it.
