Four unmanaged cloud providers at roughly the same price, with meaningfully different strengths — plus the UK-specific options nobody mentions.
At the bottom of the cloud market, £4–£6/month buys a 2 vCPU, 2–4 GB virtual machine from any of half a dozen providers. The specifications look interchangeable. They are not, and the differences are mostly not about performance.

Hetzner wins on hardware, decisively
Four gigabytes of RAM and two cores for the price of one gigabyte and one core elsewhere is not a marginal difference — it is roughly triple the machine. The network is excellent, the NVMe storage is fast, and the console, API, snapshots and firewalls are all included and pleasant to use.
The cost is location: Falkenstein or Helsinki, not London, so 25–40ms of latency for UK visitors instead of 5–15ms. For a cached WordPress site that is imperceptible. For a checkout flow or daily wp-admin use from Manchester, it is felt. Support is also business-hours ticket only, which is fine until it is 11pm on a Sunday.
DigitalOcean wins on the learning curve
The LON1 region plus what is genuinely the best technical documentation library in the industry. If you are self-hosting for the first time, DigitalOcean's tutorials will walk you through nginx, PHP-FPM, certbot and firewalls with commands that work, and the one-click WordPress and LEMP images shorten the build considerably. The Droplet you get is a third of Hetzner's machine for the money, and you are paying for the ecosystem rather than the CPU. For a first server, that is a defensible trade.
Akamai (Linode) wins on support
The differentiator at this price point is that a $5 customer gets 24/7 ticket and phone support from actual humans. Nobody else at the entry tier does that — DigitalOcean is ticket-only, Lightsail wants you on a paid AWS support plan. If self-hosting makes you nervous, that phone number is worth more than a specification bump. Post-acquisition product churn is the ongoing question mark.
Lightsail wins only as an on-ramp
Flat pricing, a London region, AWS network quality, and a clear upgrade path into full EC2, VPC and RDS when you outgrow it. If you expect to end up in the wider AWS ecosystem anyway, starting here saves a migration later. If you do not, the Bitnami stack images are an unusual way to administer a server and the support situation is worse than the alternatives.
The UK options nobody mentions
- Mythic Beasts — Cambridge, VPS from about £4, IPv6-native, and support from engineers who will discuss your routing with you. The best choice if you are technical and want a genuinely British provider.
- OVHcloud — London and Erith regions, and unbeatable pricing once you move up to dedicated hardware. Consumer support is famously slow.
- Bytemark — York-based, from about £10, chosen for explicit UK data residency rather than price.
Two things that catch everyone
Email. Every provider here blocks or restricts outbound port 25. Your WordPress site will not send password resets, order confirmations or contact form notifications until you configure an SMTP relay — Mailgun, Postmark, Brevo or SES — with a plugin like WP Mail SMTP. Budget an hour for this and do not discover it after launch.
Backups are extra, and off by default. The 20% surcharge for provider snapshots is worth paying, and it is still not sufficient on its own: snapshots live with the provider. Push an independent copy to separate object storage as well. Our self-hosting walkthrough has a working script.
Short answer: Hetzner if you want the most machine and can accept German or Finnish latency. DigitalOcean if it is your first server and you want a London region with the best documentation. Akamai if you want a phone number. Mythic Beasts if UK independence matters.
