Where UK websites actually live

Slough, Docklands, Manchester and a former paper mill in Erith. A geography of British hosting, and why it explains your latency.

"UK hosting" resolves to a surprisingly small number of physical buildings. Knowing which ones tells you something useful about latency, resilience and what your host is actually reselling.

The clusters

Slough and the M4 corridor. The densest concentration of data centre capacity in Europe outside Amsterdam and Frankfurt, built along the fibre routes west of London and close to Heathrow. Equinix, Ark, Virtus and others operate campuses here. Much of what is sold as "London hosting" is actually Slough.

London Docklands. Telehouse North in the Docklands is the historic centre of British internet infrastructure and home to LINX, the London Internet Exchange, where the majority of UK networks peer with one another. If your traffic goes between two UK providers, it very probably passes through here. Density brings latency advantages and concentration risk in equal measure.

Manchester. The main northern hub, anchored by IX Manchester and facilities operated by Equinix and others. 34SP and Krystal both use Manchester capacity. For northern visitors it is a few milliseconds closer than London, which matters less than the resilience argument for not putting everything in the south-east.

Erith. OVHcloud's UK facility sits on the Thames estuary in south-east London, alongside its Slough presence. It is where a good deal of cheap UK bare metal physically lives.

Gloucester. Fasthosts owns and operates its own facility here, which is genuinely unusual โ€” most hosts rent space rather than build it.

Elsewhere. Netcetera runs a Tier 3 facility on the Isle of Man; Memset uses Reading and Dunsfold; Mythic Beasts has Cambridge and London presence; Freethought operates from Coventry and London. York, Leeds, Cardiff and Edinburgh all have regional capacity.

Why the geography matters

Latency is smaller than people think, within the UK. London to Manchester is around 5ms. London to Edinburgh, perhaps 10ms. The meaningful jumps are international: 15โ€“25ms to Amsterdam or Frankfurt, 25โ€“40ms to Falkenstein or Helsinki, 75ms+ to the US east coast. Choosing Manchester over London for a UK audience is a rounding error; choosing Virginia is not. Our latency post works through the arithmetic.

Owning versus renting tells you about the business. A host with its own facility โ€” Fasthosts, Netcetera, OVH โ€” has capital committed and controls its own power, cooling and physical security. A host renting racks is dependent on the operator's standards, which is fine and normal, but means "our data centre" in marketing copy is often "our cabinets".

Concentration is a real risk. A great deal of British hosting sits within twenty miles of Heathrow. Regional power events and the 2022 heatwave, which caused cooling failures at several London facilities, are the kind of thing that argues for your backups being somewhere else entirely โ€” ideally another country.

The questions worth asking a UK host

  • Which facility, and do you own it or rent in it? Both answers are acceptable; evasion is not.
  • Where are backups stored relative to the live data? "The same building" is a common and unsatisfying answer.
  • Do you peer at LINX or IXManchester? Direct peering means better routes to UK eyeball networks than transit alone.
  • What is the power arrangement? N+1 with generators is standard; ask if they will not say.

For most sites this is background rather than a purchasing criterion. It becomes decisive for two groups: anyone answering procurement questionnaires about data residency, and anyone planning disaster recovery seriously enough to want their backups in a different jurisdiction from their servers.
